Wampler Solid in Return to Champ Sprints at Lawton Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - LAWTON, Okla. (July 7, 2014) - Cody Wampler made his long-awaited return to weekly racing at Lawton Speedway last Saturday.

"It went decent for the first night," he said. "We got the motor on Tuesday and we didn't get it busted out until Saturday morning. We were still scrounging up parts on Friday, but we got it together."

After starting eighth in his champ sprints heat race, Wampler rallied for a fourth-place result.

"It was falling on its face at the end of the straightaway," he said. "It was causing me to be a little bit tight going into the corners. Also, the carburetor was causing the motor to be a little bit warm."

That lined him up on the inside of the eighth row for the 20-lap feature.

"We were decent," he said. "Just getting back in it and getting smooth again is the biggest challenge."

Wampler picked up a handful of positions and despite fighting a brakes issue, he was just outside the top 10 when he noticed the engine was running too hot.

"I heard it change tunes and I looked at it and it was 260 degrees," he said.

That forced Wampler to pull off the track with only a couple of laps remaining. He was credited with a 19th-place result.

"Overall it wasn't bad for the first night," he said. "The competition there has really stepped up since the last time we raced there. There's some quality drivers."

Wampler is set to return to Lawton Speedway this Saturday.
