Wampler Rallies at Lawton for Third Consecutive Top-Five Finish

Inside Line Promotions - LAWTON, Okla. (Aug. 3, 2014) - Cody Wampler earned his third consecutive top-five result last Saturday at Lawton Speedway.

"Overall it was a pretty good night," he said. "We got some rain this week so the track stayed heavy."

Wampler opened the night by advancing from fourth to second place in his heat race.

"In the first three laps we got up to second in the heat race," he said. "We were a touch tight. It was hammer down and the car in front of us was a fast car so we stayed in line pretty much."

Since the feature is inverted based on a points average, Wampler lined up on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.

"I fell back to eighth or so on the start," he said. "The bottom off of turn four was slick and the top was the place to be so we fell back a little bit."

Wampler then began to march toward a top five.

"I was going pretty good," he said. "We passed several cars and ended up having a couple of things happen with the car. In turn one it was really rough and we had some ruts and clods of mud bend my floor pan. And I don't know if the carburetor was flooding on me, but it died on me two times. It'd fire back up in the middle of the corner. It was kind of strange."

Wampler had climbed to the fourth position prior to the engine dying momentarily with approximately six or seven laps remaining. Then he got into the wall and broke the jacob's ladder with five laps to go. After dropping a couple of spots, Wampler made a late-race pass to secure a fifth-place finish.

"We were pretty fortunate to finish with the way it was," he said. "We feel really good."

Wampler will compete this Friday at Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas. He recorded his first top five of the season during his inaugural race at the track on July 25.
